Route C Students

What is a Route C student?

A "Route C" student is one who is considered to need a little extra help with their English and/or mathematics to give them the best opportunity to secure the strongest grades they can, in all subjects as well as English and mathematics.

How are Route C students identified?

We look at a variety of information and data as well as talking to teaching staff as to their suitability to follow academic courses including a language to GCSE standard.  Route C students have not studied French in Year 9 and therefore it is inappropriate for them to select to study it at GCSE.  However, if a Route C student is insistent on taking French GCSE then they should have a discussion with Mr Farmer  before returning their option form.

Will a Route C student obtain the English Baccalaureate (EBacc)?

No, although a Route C student will study EBacc subjects like English, mathematics, Science and Geography or History, they will not study GCSE French so will not therefore achieve the full set of EBacc qualifications.

Does a Route C student have to follow all of the EBacc subjects?

No, but they will follow them excluding French and History or Geography.

Is the EBacc important?

The EBacc is mostly used for assessing potential entry to some higher courses at college and/or University.  Route C students are best advised to concentrate on the subjects they study as well as English and mathematics.  The important thing to remember is that except in the most demanding of courses, the lack of the full EBacc suite of subjects is not likely to hinder a typical route C student in achieving their goals and progression pathways.

Route C Option Blocks.

Route C students have free choice in every Option Block other than Block A where you are not able to select Religious Studies and Block B which is English and mathematics Booster.  In specific cases it may be possible to select Religious Studies even for a Route C student depending on their other choices.  If you are clear you want to study GCSE Religious Studies please have a discussion with Mr Farmer before completing your Option Form.  You will need to use the information below, research you carry out independently and discussions with your teachers and parents/carers to decide which are the best choices for you.  Select one subject only in each block on the Options Form that is in your pack.  You will have 4 choices in total.
