What is a Route B student?

A "Route B" student is one who is considered to be strong academically and has the potential to achieve  well but not necessarily in a language.  Therefore, Route B students can select if they wish to study French or not.

How are Route B students identified?

We look at a variety of information and data as well as talking to teaching staff as to their suitability to follow academic courses including  their capacity to study a language to GCSE grade 5 standard.

Will a Route B student obtain the English Baccalaureate (EBacc)?

In order for a Route B student to achieve the required level  to be classified as an EBacc student, they will need to achieve a grade 5 or higher in English, mathematics, Science, French and either Geography or History.

Does a Route B student have to follow all of the EBacc subjects?

No, however they have the ability to do so should they wish and feel they can commit to all of the subjects fully, including French.

Is the EBacc important?

It is extremely important that able students are given the opportunity to study the EBacc subjects to GCSE standard.  Often, grades achieved in EBacc subjects will influence potential entry into Sixth Form College or other providers where A Levels are the ultimate course of study and they can also have a bearing on potential University offers.  It is of less importance potentially for those students seeking to enter a trade.
