What is a Route A student?

A "Route A" student is one who is considered to be strong academically and has the potential to achieve  well including a good grasp and desire to achieve a language.  Therefore, in line with government policy for the study of languages, Route A students will take French at GCSE as part of their curriculum.

How are Route A students identified?

We look at a variety of information and data as well as talking to teaching staff as to their suitability to follow academic courses including a language to GCSE standard.  All Route A  students have been identified as having the ability to achieve a variety of subjects at a high level and French to potentially grade 5 or higher.

Will a Route A student obtain the English Baccalaureate (EBacc)?

In order for a Route A student to achieve the required level  to be classified as an EBacc student, they will need to achieve a grade 5 or higher in English, mathematics, Science, French and either Geography or History.

Does a Route A student have to follow all of the EBacc subjects?

No, however it is worth noting that Route A students will follow English, mathematics, Science and French compulsorily, so unless selecting GCSE Religious Studies in Block A then they will by default follow all of the EBacc qualifications.

Is the EBacc important?

It is extremely important that able students are given the opportunity to study the EBacc subjects to GCSE standard.  Often, grades achieved in EBacc subjects will influence potential entry into Sixth Form College or other providers where A Levels are the ultimate course of study and they can also have a bearing on potential University offers.
